FAQs

  • What is GateHouse News Service? GateHouse News Service includes a web site with two basic functions: to facilitate shared content and to offer original content that is easily localized.
  • What’s the original content? Our original content focuses on stories that aren’t being told elsewhere, and offers graphics, maps and breakouts. We’ll break ground, find new angles on national and regional stories, and give newspapers great stories and some tips on how to make them work in your area. We also understand that space is hard to come by in newspapers these days, so we’ll write tight and give you alternate cuts.
  • What’s the shared content? The shared content piece of the news service offers key lifestyle content like home and garden, food, health and more. All of that content follows readership-driven practices and will be quick and easy to localize. Opinion — which includes at least five national political cartoons a week — and sports also will be key areas for the news service.
  • What’s in it for my newspaper? The goal of the news service is to give you content, especially in the areas of lifestyles, opinions and sports, that is easy to make your own. So, instead of having to do an entire story on planting bulbs in spring, for instance, you can take a story from the news service, make a couple of calls for some local flavor, and you’re done. The site is structured and user-friendly, so you know what you can expect from day-to-day to help you plan. For example, we offer a full schedule of opinion columnists each week.
  • Who makes up the news service? We have an editor, an assistant editor and reporter, along with four regional editors.
  • How do we submit content to the news service?

    Submit a photo

If your paper is already on the Zope web platform, your photo will already be attached to the story. Please make sure it is RGB, jpeg, that it is big enough (8 x 10 inches) and the resolution is at least 200.

If your paper is not on Zope, you will need your user name and password. You will go to site services on the top right of our homepage. Pull down to Add Photo. Fill in these fields

    • Title, include a date.
    • Caption
    • Image credit (your photographer’s name or supplied photo)
    • Source (GateHouse News Service)
    • Photo file (click browse and attach your photo here)
    • On the bottom right, click Add.
    • In the orange shaded line over the headline, find Publication and click on it.
    • On the Publication Targets page, click on GateHouse News Service - global submission.

Your photo will then be available to be attached to a story. Submit your photo first, then your story.

    Submit a story

If your paper is already on the Zope web platform and you want to submit a story you think will interest your region or the country, you will simply click on GateHouse News Service - global submission when you are posting to your own web site.

If your paper is not on Zope, you will need your user name and password (the same ones you use to access stories on our web site). You will go to site services on the top right of our homepage. Pull down to Add Story. Fill in these fields:

    • Headline
    • Short story (which is either a subhed or a short description of the story)
    • Story (cut and paste your story into the field)
    • Dateline — very important (please include your state)
    • Byline
    • Source (click GateHouse News Service)
    • Copyright (click GateHouse Media).
    • If you have a photo to add, you click Add Related, then Search for your photo by title of the photo in the system. Click on the link next to the photo and click select. Close the Related Content window and you’re back to the Add a Story page.
    • On the bottom right of the add a story page, click add.
    • In the orange shaded line over the headline, find Publication and click on it.
    • On the Publication Targets page, click on GateHouse News Service - global submission.

Your story will then go into a queue for the editors at the news service to edit and post to our web site.

  • How can editors provide the news service with feedback? Some editors are already giving us information through advisory panels we have established. We are going to continue to build on those panels, creating regional groups to offer input in various areas as needed. If you want to be involved, contact National News Service Editor Jean Hodges. Or perhaps you just want to give us ideas or feedback informally. We welcome your comments. You can e-mail me at jhodges@gatehousemedia.com.
